Grand Patrimoine : our project, our values

The Département de Loire-Atlantique is home to a large number of monuments and has been preserving and displaying collections since the mid-19th century.

The Château de Châteaubriant was the first acquisition of the Conseil général (departmental council) in 1853. Seven years later, the Musée départemental d’archéologie (Departmental Museum of Archaeology) opened in Nantes. The bequest by Thomas Dobrée in 1895 brought about the creation of the museum that bears his name, and all of the Département’s collections (art and archaeology) were jointly housed in the Palais Dobrée and the Manoir de la Touche.

Between 1962 and 1979, the Château de Clisson and the Église du vieux bourg de Saint-Sulpice-des-Landes (church) also came under the protection of the Département. As did La Garenne Lemot Estate in 1968.

In 2013, all of these collections and historical monuments were grouped together under the supervision of the departmental heritage service known as Grand Patrimoine de Loire-Atlantique.
By uniting our teams, sharing our expertise and pooling the resources offered by the Département to manage these sites, we have optimized the preservation and promotion of our heritage.

The wide range of professions represented within our organization allows us to diversify our cultural programming and to constantly renew the visitor’s experience. The content of our exhibitions and workshops, and the tours offered by facilitators, are designed by experts in their fields.

Hosting some of the Musée Dobrée’s exhibitions off-site, at other heritage venues, allows us to develop our ‘off-site’ programme by sharing and presenting its collections throughout the region, bringing them closer to all kinds of audiences in Loire-Atlantique.

By bringing together the main fields of archaeological research, we offer the public a comprehensive overview of all stages of our work, from the excavation to the museum.

Grand Patrimoine represents + knowledge + exhibitions + cultural events and activities in Loire-Atlantique!
